My criteria for good breeding stock includes:
Health:
All my
pigs are kept on a rigorous vaccination and de-worming schedule to ensure
their health and the health of their offspring.
Genetics:
It is of
utmost importance to keep a clean breeding line – that is, not breeding pigs
who are closely related. It can be a chore finding out-crossed stock to
incorporate into my breeding program and I pay very close attention to the
genetics of all my breeding pigs.
Conformation (Body shape):
In a good
breeding female I look for a nice, round rump with good width between the
back legs, an even underline with at least ten evenly spaced teats, and
suitable size. I keep breeding for a smaller, but correctly conformed pig.
In the male I look for the same qualities with emphasis on structure and
balance.
Soundness:
This means
that the pig’s structure is correct – straight legs, good pasterns, and
proper balance.
Tractability (Friendliness):
All my
breeding pigs are chosen because they have wonderful, calm, friendly
personalities so that this trait is passed on to their offspring.
